Description
What Is Oxandrolone?
Oxandrolone is a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS), a man-made derivative of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is chemically known as 17β-hydroxy-17α-methyl-2-oxa-5α-androstan-3-one (or 2-oxa-17α-methyl-5α-dihydrotestosterone). It has a unique structure where an oxygen atom replaces a carbon at position 2, which contributes to its properties.
It is classified as a Schedule III controlled substance in the US due to its potential for misuse, though it has legitimate medical uses. It is taken orally as tablets (typically 2.5 mg or 10 mg strengths).
How It Works
Oxandrolone acts as an agonist of the androgen receptor, mimicking the effects of testosterone but with a higher anabolic (muscle-building) to androgenic (masculinizing) ratio compared to many other steroids. This means it promotes protein synthesis, muscle growth, and weight gain while causing relatively fewer androgenic side effects (like voice deepening or excessive hair growth) at therapeutic doses.
It helps counteract catabolic (tissue-breaking) states by increasing nitrogen retention and reducing muscle breakdown.
